I am a mother who stays at home, so I understand that we may have a different advantage than those who work. Nevertheless, many local libraries offer stories for children whose parents work in the afternoons and weekends. So there is no reason why a child cannot learn many of these “basic skills”. I think as long as the learning process is bypassed, they will be open to it. I feel qualified to comment because my eldest son has become good. At the age of 4 he went to preschool and did NOT learn the alphabet this year . At the age of 16 he attended Harvard and finished his double studies at the age of 19.

My 2 years can make most of this list simply through the daily interactions we have with it. However, not all parents have the luxury of spending as much time as we do with their children. Teachers need to understand that most parents really try to help their children learn.
