Hair Loss

Gradual dilution of hair with age is a natural condition known as involuntary alopecia. This is caused by an increasing number of hair follicles that change from the growth phase, or anagen, to a resting phase or telogen phase, so that the remaining hairs become shorter and less numerous. An unhealthy scalp environment can play an important role in thinning hair by contributing to miniaturization or causing damage. “Our body perceives mental stress in the same way as physical stress, and dramatic stressors in the body can cause hair growth to be arrested,” said Dr. Henry said. Examination of the scalp in patients with telogen effluvium generally shows uniform thinning of the hair. The presence of erythema, peeling or inflammation; altered or uneven hair distribution; or changes in asmate, length, shape or vulnerability may suggest other diagnoses.

Common types are hair loss in men or women, alopecia areata and thinning hair known as telogen effluvium. “Low levels of vitamin D have been associated with various types of hair loss, including telogen effluvium, an autoimmune disease called alopecia areata and hair loss in women,” said Dr. Zubritsky. We consider hair loss to be a common problem in men, but women also experience it. Less than 45% of women spend their entire lives with their heads full. Hair loss in women is a common cause and increases with advanced age.

Blood thinners and blood pressure medications can do that too. Medicines can also be used to treat depression, heart disease and arthritis. Doctors characterize the severity of hair loss using something called the Savin density scale.

You can also lose your hair if you have certain diseases, such as thyroid problems, diabetes or lupus. If you are taking certain medications 男士甩頭髮 or have cancer chemotherapy, you may also lose hair. Other causes are stress, a low protein diet, family history or poor nutrition.

Trichotillomania is an impulse control disorder; Treatment is aimed at controlling the underlying psychiatric condition. Trichorrhexis nodosa occurs when the hairs break due to trauma and is often the result of a haircut or excessive use of hair products. Anagen effluvium is abnormally diffuse hair loss during the growth phase caused by an event that damages the mitotic activity of the hair follicles, usually chemotherapy.

It takes a while after pregnancy for hormone levels to return to normal, so it is not uncommon for postpartum mothers to notice slimming hair or even bald spots. This often happens about three months after the baby arrives. Don’t worry, while the rest of your body recovers, your hair follicles will too. Hair transplantation is a surgical procedure in which a doctor removes the hair from the scalp and takes it to parts of the scalp where it thins. In the event of hair loss in women, the hair can be thin anywhere, making it difficult to find suitable donor places for hair harvesting.

Men with this type of hair loss have generally inherited the property. Men who start to lose hair at a young age tend to develop more extensive baldness. In male pattern baldness, hair loss generally results in a hairline and a decreasing baldness on top of the head.

Minoxidil, or Rogaine, is a topical drug used to treat hair loss in women and baldness in men. It was initially developed as a blood pressure drug and was used off-label to treat hair loss until approved by the FDA for that purpose. The medication should be used continuously to maintain results. Other types of treatments work for different types of hair loss.

Hair transplantation is more effective for people suffering from male pattern baldness or for people suffering from dilution of the frontal scalp. Patients may need multiple sessions to achieve the desired results. Hair that comes out in groups suggests telogen effluvium. Systemic symptoms such as fatigue and weight gain suggest hypothyroidism, while a feverish illness, stressful event or recent pregnancy may explain diffuse hair loss from the telogen effluvium.
